The Red Siskin Initiative (RSI) has reached a turning point in its program. Because of the funds Conservation Nation supplied RSI, they were able to launch a fledging facility to house red siskins rescued from the illegal pet trade. Located in Aragua, Venezuela, this new facility has allowed RSI to build a growing partnership with authorities, regularly receiving confiscated birds from them and making a significant impact on the illegal trade.

The red siskin is a distinctive songbird that greatly needs protection. The red siskins’ population declined due to the lucrative European pet trade. It has been estimated that at one time, fewer than 200 songbirds remained in their natural habitat. However, progress has been made because of programs like the Red Siskin Initiative.

The funds provided to RSI from Conservation Nation brought new momentum to this program. The new facility’s success in Venezuela has generated interest from other donors and allowed RSI to add a diagnostic lab and other unique functions.
