- Maula Nadia is a marine biologist from Indonesia who is actively conducting both research and conservation for elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) through various initiatives. She is a Ph.D. student researching the use of molecular methods for elasmobranch fishery and trade monitoring. She is also part of Elasmobranch Project Indonesia (EPI), where the team uses citizen science and community-based approaches to support elasmobranch conservation and management.
Building Bridges: Communicating Science for Shark and Ray Conservation
Maula’s project focuses on closing the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding by using various media to communicate science for shark and ray conservation. Despite their ecological importance, elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) face increasing threats from overfishing and habitat loss, making them one of the most vulnerable species groups in the world. Research and conservation efforts are growing globally; however, there remains a gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding. The project aims to translate scientific research into accessible, engaging formats tailored to diverse audiences, including teachers, students, divers, and decision-makers. Through storytelling, visual tools, and participatory approaches such as citizen science, the project seeks to foster awareness and shift perceptions of these species in Indonesia.
