Project Overview

Mangrove Revival: Kidongo Women Leading Kenya’s Coastal Restoration

Kidongo Area, Mtwapa Creek, Kilifi County, Kenya

Fredrick’s project will restore 5 hectares of critical mangrove habitat, establishing 20,000 native seedlings (Avicennia marinaRhizophora mucronata, and Sonneratia alba) that sequester approximately 750 tons of CO₂ over ten years while providing an essential breeding habitat for threatened species including hawksbill turtles and Maxwell’s duiker. Target outcomes include 25% increase in crab density within 18 months, 15+ bird species documented in restored areas, and 20% improvement in fish abundance in adjacent waters within 24 months.
